FAQ

What is WordPress and how is it different from a regular website?

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that makes updating websites super easy for you to do yourself online. It’s based on a blogging platform, but is powerful enough to create a whole website. WordPress was created using open source software, which is all about sharing, and allows programmers to use the technology to constantly make improvements. So anyone who can program using WordPress can create and update themes (styles), widgets and plugins. This makes it easy for people to use different features on a website, without having to create it yourself. This saves both time and money for everyone.

What is a theme?
A WordPress Theme is a collection of files that work together to produce the design for your website. Update That Website uses a premium, customizable, theme that is flexible and lays out the content of your website in a way that makes it easy to navigate.

Can I change my theme later?
Yes. With WordPress, it’s easy to change the theme yourself at any time.

What is a plugin?
Plugins are programs that allow easy modification, customization and enhancement of your WordPress website. Instead of changing the core programming of the website, you can simply add more functionality using Plugins.

What plugins do you recommend installing?
These free plugins are great for basic websites (with a blog):
FD Feedburner – to make it easy for readers of your blog to subscribe
Contact Form 7 – for your contact page
Firewall – for security
BackWPup – to automate the backup of your content
Google Analyticator or StatPressVisitors – to track your traffic
Google XML Sitemap – helps search engines index your site
SpamFree – cleans up comment spam on your blog

I heard that WordPress and Plugins need to be updated occasionally. Will you make the updates for me?
I can teach you how to perform updates but if you prefer, I can do them for you for $20 per month.

Do you do custom website design?
Yes. Contact me for a quote.

Are there any other fees or charges?
To keep your website live and running, you will also need to pay for a domain name (URL) and website hosting.

Domain Name Registration – this is the unique web address for your business (eg. www.yourbusinessname.com). Domain names can be registered through a number of services, such as GoDaddy or Bluehost (affiliate link).

Website Hosting – your website can also be hosted through a number of services, I recommend Bluehost (affiliate link) for fast and secure WordPress hosting.

Can you still set up my website if I already have hosting with another company?
Yes, I can work with your current website host as long as they are running: PHP version 5.2.4 or greater and MySQL version 5.0 or greater. To get your website up and running, I will need your login username and password.

Do I get full control of my website?
Yes, you will have 100% control to make any changes you like. This is why I love using WordPress – you can easily update images, photographs, headings, content, colors and more.

How easy is it to change images and photographs later?
Very easy. You can do this yourself. You just need to make sure your image size meets the criteria (eg. 150 x 940 pixels for the header).
